Birding

With its subtropical climate and location along the convergence of several migratory pathways, the Laredo area is a bird enthusiast's paradise and attracts ornithologists from around the world. Its fascinating mix of birds includes over 150 species including three that are extremely rare in the U.S., such as the Clay-Colored Robin, the Red-Billed Pigeon and the White-Collared Seedeater (known as the "million dollar bird" because of its rarity). However, such species as Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni), Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus), Black Phoebe (Sayornis nigricans), Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps), Cactus Wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus), White-Tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi) and Green Jay are also frequent visitors.

Specific areas that offer excellent vantage points for birding include: St. Peter's Neighborhood Landmark Historic District, the river road behind the Laredo Community College Campus, Lake Casa Blanca International State Park, Zacate Creek, Father Charles McNaboe Park, La Bota Ranch, and Lobo Creek.
