History of La Posada Hotel

La Posada is one of the oldest and grandest hotels in South Texas. Its main building sits on the foundation of the site of Laredo's first government – the Casa Judicial. The hotel had its beginnings in 1916, first as a Spanish Colonial convent and then home to Laredo's first high school. In 1961, a local businessman and graduate of the high school saw great potential in his alma mater and converted it to a luxury hotel.

La Posada's main building is located between two historic structures:
  • The elegant Victorian A.M. Bruni residence later became the Laredo Telephone Exchange, served as a customs house, and is now home to the hotel's Tack Room Bar & Grill.

  • The old San Agustin Convent now houses the San Agustin Ballroom and the George Washington's Birthday Association Museum, which honors Laredo's century old tradition of the Washington Birthday Celebration and was added to the property in 2000.

La Posada Hotel also has a second museum on its premises – the original 150-year old Capitol building of the Republic of the Rio Grande.

In 2007, La Posada underwent a complete $15 million makeover that celebrates the hotel's historic Spanish influence and colonial architecture. After nearly 50 years of service, La Posada Hotel still bustles with activity, playing host to countless entertainers, politicians and sports celebrities.
